This architecturally designed home by X-Space architects takes full advantage of the opportunities that come with inner city living. The owners briefing to the architect was to create a home that was focused around entertaining that included flexibility in how one occupies a living space in order to get maximum use out of the home.
Large bi-folding doors peel back off the ground floor living spaces to open up the home and blur the lines between what is inside and outside in order to create a very open and comfortable living and entertaining area. The orientation and location of the outdoor courtyards allows for a morning sun courtyard to the rear of the home and an afternoon sun courtyard to the front of the home. The two courtyards ultimately increase flexibility in how one uses the outdoor living spaces of the home whilst fully utilising the site as much as possible.
The clever planning of spaces, different height volumes, positioning, size and different types of openings all influence the overall experience of the home. During the day, natural light pours through from all angles to provide a sense of liveliness.
The external aesthetics of the home consists of a fusion of pitched and flat roof forms to embrace the neighbouring gable roofs from the surrounding houses whilst providing a modern look with the flat roof forms. The southern metal clad wall to the upper storey of the home creeps up to become the roof in one seem less transition.
A combination of different building materials have been carefully used in order to provide for the longevity of the home, respond to thermal performance requirements, create articulation in the external facades and animate the internal spaces.
Not only does this home incorporate an array of sustainable building principles, it is a perfect demonstration of how a home can respond to lifestyle wants and needs.
